The 1500+ move: Predict your own word before looking at the choices. Cover the answers, read the sentence, and decide what it needs. Then match.
How to attack it
- Find the clue. Some part of the text defines or hints at the blank — a contrast word ("but," "however"), an example, or a restatement.
- Watch the charge. Is the missing word positive, negative, or neutral? Eliminate anything with the wrong tone instantly.
- Precision over vibes. Two choices may both "sound smart." Only one matches the exact relationship in the sentence.
Trap to know: The SAT loves offering a word that fits the topic but not the logic. "Science-y" words in a science passage aren't automatically right.
These are usually the fastest points in the section. Bank them quickly so you have time for the reading-heavy questions.
Worked examples
Although the instructions were meant to clarify, they only ____ the process, leaving readers more confused.
- Cover the answer choices and predict your own word first.
- The clue is 'leaving readers more confused' — and 'Although… meant to clarify' sets up a contrast.
- So the blank means the opposite of clarify: something like 'confused' or 'muddled.'
- Now match: a word like 'obscured' fits. A word like 'simplified' would contradict the sentence.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Picking a word that sounds sophisticated instead of one that fits the sentence's logic.
- Ignoring contrast signals like 'although,' 'but,' 'yet,' 'despite,' and 'far from' — they flip the meaning of the blank.
- Choosing a word that fits the topic but not the relationship (a 'science-y' word in a science passage isn't automatically right).
- Not predicting a word first. Reading the choices cold makes several of them sound plausible.
